To attend any course you must be a member of the Scout movement. Some course are marked for First Luton Sea Scouts only.

All Courses are held at our Boat House and on the lake within Luton Hoo.

All course Start at 9.30am and finish at approx 5pm each day.

Powerboat Training

RYA Powerboat Level 2 – 2 Day Course – £95 (inc. lunch)

This course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat. It includes engine checks, close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. No previous experience is necessary. You must be over 14 years of age. If you pass you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for Powerboating.

RYA Safety Boat – 2 Day Course – £95 (inc. lunch)

This course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers, kayaks or canoes, or for racing or training activities.

You must hold a Power Level 2 and be over 16 years of age. It is desirable to also hold a first aid certificate and ideally you should have at least 1 season of powerboating experience.

Sailing Training

RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 2 – 2 Day Course – £80 (inc. lunch)

This aim of the course is to teach you all you need to know to confidently take control of a dinghy, in moderate conditions, from rigging the boat, launching, sailing in all directions, man over board and capsize drill. No previous experience is necessary. You must be over 14 years of age. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for dinghy sailing.

RYA Dinghy Sailing Youth Stage 1&2 – 2 Day Course – £45

This course is an introduction to sailing and covers basic sailing skills including boat handling, launching and recovery, steering, rope work, collision avoidance parts of the boat and basic sailing skills.

RYA Dinghy Sailing Youth Stage 3&4 – 2 Day Course – £45

This is a intermediate course covering boat rigging, launching and recovery, sailing techniques, manoeuvres in crewed boats, capsize recovery, sailing theory and man overboard. At the end of this course you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle course in moderate conditions. If you successfully pass the course you may also be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Personal Permit for Dinghy Sailing.

Kayak & Canoe Training

British Canoeing 3 Star Touring Canoe Course –£80

This is an intermediate course that builds on the skills learnt on the 2 Star course. You will paddling as a member of a group in a variety of venues including open water in conditions of winds up to Beaufort Force 3, and/or ungraded rivers that have a discernible green flow. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit or reduce the restrictions on your current Permit.

BCU 2 Star Kayak & Canoe – two day plus two hour pool session – £80 (inc. lunch)

This course covers the basics in both kayak and canoe including efficient methods of paddling, turning, stopping, reversing, capsize recovery and more. Some basic experience is advisable but not essential. You must be over 14 years of age. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for Kayaking and Canoeing.

BCU FSRT Course (Foundation Safety and Rescue Training) – 1 Day Course – £80 (inc. lunch)

This course covers various rescue techniques in both kayak and canoe and covers group management skills when running Kayak/Canoe sessions, which is ideal in a scout environment. The course is very hands on and you will get very wet. You must hold a BCU 2 star and be over 14 years of age. It is desirable to also hold a first aid certificate. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit or reduce the restrictions on your current Permit.

This course is an introduction to kayaking and canoeing and covers basic skills including boat safety, water confidence, manoeuvring forward, backwards, sideways and turning.

Rafting Training

Scout Traditional Rafting Course – 1 Day Course – £40 (inc. lunch)

This course covers the basics in Traditional rafting including how to build various rafts and group management. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit and then run rafting sessions for your own Scouts.

British Rowing Explore Rowing Stage 1 Course – 1 Day Course – £40 (inc. lunch)

This course covers the basics in Pulling (rowing a fixed seat boat) including manoeuvring skills and pulling orders. No prior rowing/pulling experience is necessary. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for Pulling.

First Aid Training

RYA 1st Aid – 1 Day Course – £35

This course is designed to teach you what to do in many of the situations where people have accidents whilst on a small craft from how to resuscitate someone to how to treat minor cuts. This course is useful for anyone who goes out on the water and an RYA requirement for those taking Instructor Courses. At the end of the course you will qualify for the RYA 1st Aid Certificate which are valid for 3 years from time of issue.
