Training

Our training programme is updated each year and dates are shown below. Courses are held at our Boat House and on the lake within Luton Hoo, starting at 9.30am and finishing around 5.30pm each day.

To book in you must be a member of the Scout movement, speak with us to confirm and access the booking pages. Note some courses are marked for First Luton Sea Scouts group members only.

Powerboat Training


RYA Powerboat Level 2 – 2 Day Course - £150 (inc. lunch)

This course provides the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat. It includes engine checks, close quarters handling, high speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations. RYA certification included. Log books are available at extra cost, if required.

No previous experience is necessary. You must be over 14 years of age. Course ratio is 3 Students to 1 Instructor. 





RYA Safety Boat – 2 Day Course - £150 (inc. lunch)

This course provides the skills required when acting as an escort craft, safety boat or coach boat for a fleet of dinghies, windsurfers, kayaks or canoes, or for racing or training activities. RYA certification included. Log books are available at extra cost, if required.

You must hold a Power Level 2 and be over 16 years of age. It is desirable to also hold a first aid certificate and ideally you should have at least 1 season of powerboating experience. Course ratios are: 3 Students to 1 Instructor. 



Sailing Training


RYA Dinghy Sailing Level 2 – 2 Day Course - £100 (inc. lunch)

This course will teach you to confidently take control of a dinghy in moderate conditions; from rigging the boat, launching, sailing in all directions, man over board and capsize drill. RYA certification included. Log books are available at extra cost, if required.

No previous experience is necessary. You must be over 14 years of age. If you pass the course, you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for dinghy sailing. Course ratios are: 3 Students to 1 Instructor. 




Paddlesport Training


British Canoeing Paddle Discover Award - Kayaking – 1 day – £50 (inc. lunch)

This is a beginner’s course with the aim to provide the skills and background knowledge needed on flat water to control the movement of kayaks, and have an understanding of how the paddle, boat, and water interact. You must be over 14 years of age. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for Kayaking.





British Canoeing Paddle Discover Award - Canoeing – 1 day – £50 (inc. lunch)

This is a beginner’s course with the aim to provide the skills and background knowledge needed on flat water to control the movement of canoes, and have an understanding of how the paddle, boat, and water interact. You must be over 14 years of age. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for Canoeing.






British Canoeing Paddle Discover Award – Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) – 1 day – £50 (inc. lunch)

This is a beginner’s course with the aim to provide the skills and background knowledge needed on flat water to control the movement of SUP’s, and have an understanding of how the paddle, board, and water interact. You must be over 14 years of age. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for Stand Up Paddleboarding.






British Canoeing Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Course – 1 Day Course – £85 (inc. lunch)

This course covers various rescue techniques for all Paddlesports and covers group management skills when running Paddlesport sessions, which is ideal in a Scout environment. The course is very hands on and you will get very wet. You can complete the course in either a Kayak, Canoe or SUP or all three. You must hold a BC Discover Award, be competent in your chosen craft and be over 14 years of age. It is desirable to also hold a first aid certificate. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit in Kayak, Canoe or SUPs, or reduce the restrictions on your current Permits.





British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor Course – 2 Day Course – £175 (inc. lunch)

The qualification will support the instructor with practical skills such as kitting up a group and getting afloat, initial familiarisation activities, games and activities to support learning and how to use mini journeys to support learning, inspire adventure and exploration. This will be enhanced with support on how these sessions can be delivered in a way that is enjoyable, safe and rewarding. The Paddlesport Instructor qualification is designed for instructors running Paddlesport taster/starter sessions within the safety management systems of clubs, centres, Scouting or other organisations in:

  • Very Sheltered Water environments
  • Craft deemed suitable for a first-time experience

The final assessment is carried out in the craft of your choice (kayak, Canoe or SUP).

You must hold the British Canoeing FSRT or Paddlesport Safety and Rescue Award, have Full National (British Canoeing) Association membership, be over 14 years of age and a member of the Scout Association. It is desirable to also hold a first aid certificate. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit in Kayak, Canoe or SUPs, or reduce the restrictions on your current Permits.




Rafting Training


Scout Traditional Rafting Course – 1 Day Course - £50 (inc. lunch)

This course covers the basics in Traditional rafting including how to build various rafts and group management. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit and then run rafting sessions for your own Scouts.




Rowing Training


Scout Pulling/Rowing – 1 Day Course - £50 (inc. lunch)

This course covers the basics in Pulling (rowing a fixed seat boat) including manoeuvring skills and pulling orders. No prior rowing/pulling experience is necessary. If you successfully pass the course you may be able to apply for a Scout Adventurous Activity Permit for Pulling.




First Aid Training


RYA First Aid – 1 Day Course - £50

This course teaches First Aid for situations where people have accidents whilst on a small craft; from treating minor cuts to resuscitation. This course is valuable for anyone who goes out on the water, it's also an essential requirement for those taking RYA Instructor Courses.

Course ratios are: 12 Students to 1 Instructor. On course completion you recieve an RYA First Aid Certificate, valid for 3 years from time of issue, and a First Aid book is also included.
