Outdoor Challenge Badge

The Beavers have been very busy this term completing their Hobbies Badge, Safety Badge and continuing to work towards their Chief Scout Bronze Award with activities for their Friendship Challenge Badge and Outdoor Challenge Badge. This last badge was the focus for their activities on March 7th and saw them taking part in 3 different activities.

Could they learn 2 knots? Know what to pack in a rucksack for a day trip? And could they plan a trail using sticks and stones as signs for others to follow? The Outdoor Challenge Badge was underway!

Paddy led the way with the knots and helped the Beavers a little bit by colouring in the ends of the rope with different colours-a very useful trick to know! We’ll have to see if they remember the knots he taught them next week!

Rabbit and Amik taught the Beavers how to make natural signs to follow from sticks and stones, so that you could leave a trail for people to follow with things you’d find on your walk. The Beavers then got to plan a trail using the signs on a special route planning sheet. We had hoped that they could go outside and try it for real but sadly the weather let us down. We’ll make sure we lay a trail outside when we’re at Luton Hoo for the summer season.

The final activity had the Beavers getting their thinking caps on about what they’d need if they were going on a day trip. Lunch was the top of everyone’s list! We also thought about how the weather may change very quickly and what types of things you’d need to “Be prepared!” Being prepared included taking things like suncream, a first aid kit, a hat and very importantly a map if you were going somewhere special so you wouldn’t get lost.

With all the activities checked off, the Beavers are one step closer to achieving their Outdoor Challenge Badge. Well done boys! :)
