On 5th February 2011, a group of scouts attended the district 5-a-side football competition. It was the first time that we had entered and things were very close, but the boys played very well and managed to win!

Summer Camp 2010 – Beaudesert, Cannock Chase
In August 2010 our Summer Camp was held at Beaudesert Scout Camp Site and Activity Centre. The Site is situated in 123 Acres of woodlands in Cannock Wood in Staffordshire. Unfortunately the weather was not kind to us as it rained most of the week. However in true Sea Scouting fashion we did not let a bit of water spoil our fun.
The camp was packed full of activities all week and most of us need another week off to recover (and dry out!!).
The activities we did on site where:
- Peddle cars – This was the 1st Luton Grand Prix. The racing was tight and the crashes were spectacular (Most of the crashes involved the Leaders – Says a lot for their driving skills). The winner with the fastest lap time was Craig Staff.
- Low ropes – Balance and teamwork was the key, having to work your way round the course without touching the floor.
- Swing boat – Being Sea Scouts we had to do something boating, so we carried out a Pioneering project and made a swing boat.
- Tree Climbing – Yes this was an organised activity. At the top of a very tall tree is a bell. The fastest time up the tree to ring the bell was by George Beeley in less than 20 seconds. Don’t worry everyone climbing was properly harnessed up and secured to a rope.
- Abseiling – This involved abseiling into a quarry, made even harder due to the wet quarry face.
- Archery – The highest score was by George Bell
- Survival day and bivouacs – fortunately the rain held off for the night and the weather proofing of the bivouacs did not have to be tested.
And the activities off site where:
- Water World – A huge water park full of slides and rides – as if we needed more water.
- Iron Bridge Museum – We spent a wet day at Blist Hill Victorian village where we went back in time to live life in the 1920’s
- Alton Towers – We ended the week with a day out at Alton Towers. – enough said.
We ended the week with out traditional Banquet and awards. Stanley Peddle won an award for the Scout who got the most out of the camp, Emma Colemans’s Patrol won the best Patrol award and Michael Degroot won the converted “Kipper of the week” award for over sleeping and being an hour late for camp. Well done to all those who won awards, even Sleepy Michael.

Summer Camp 2009 – Calshot
In 2009 our Summer Camp was held at Calshot Activity Center. The Center is based right on the south coast between the Solent and Southampton water. Our camp site was so close to the water that you could practically roll out of bed into it! Obviously, this made it a great location for us to make the most of our new sailing boats and our new RIB safety boat.
Even with over 50 people attending the camp, every Scout and most of the Leaders managed to get out in the new boats. The new RIB, “Centenary” performed exceptionally on the sea and all the Scouts got to drive her. I am not sure that all of the Leaders enjoyed jumping over the waves at over 30 knots as much as the Scouts did! The weather for sailing was fantastic with some really strong winds. Unfortunately the campsite took a beating from the winds and some of the tents did not fair too well.
We also kayaked in the bay, built some rafts and made Coracles out of plastic pipe and sheeting. Some where more successful than others.
As well as the water activities we also had a go at some not so wet activities, including a huge foot ball tournament, climbing on one of the largest indoor artificial climbing walls in the country and indoor dry slope skiing. Both the climbing and the skiing provided some great photo opportunities (Philly’s facial expression on the ski lift was priceless).
As if we hadn’t had enough water fun we also visited a water fun park, full of slides and water rides.
To end the week we got our feet firmly on dry land, well sort off. More like our feet were a bit wobbly 50 foot up in the trees at “Go Ape” high ropes tree adventure course.
We ended the week with out traditional Banquet and awards. Michael Degroot won an award for the Scout who got the most out of the camp, Teagan Jade Oxford’s Patrol won the best Patrol award and Denzil Spilsbury won the converted “Kipper of the week” award for going down a water slide so fast he ended up screaming like a baby – nice one Denzil.
